Returning for 2026 is My Ruca, a comfortable 59-foot Nomad that proved last year that flexibility and heart can make all the difference. When several last-minute boat breakdowns created unexpected challenges, My Ruca stepped up without hesitation, taking on three additional Veterans. After the trip, Captain and co-owner Tony Sammartino reflected that having those extra Veterans aboard only enhanced the experience. In all his years participating with WHOW, he said this trip was the most meaningful and memorable yet—for both the Veterans and the crew. Most boats begin the event with two Veterans aboard, and simple math would suggest that My Ruca carried five. But the reality was closer to seven, as both co-owners, Tony and Walter, are retired Marines themselves. Walter proudly served for 20 years, while Tony dedicated 25 years to the Corps. Their commitment to service continues long after their military careers ended. With My Ruca back in the fold for 2026, guided by two Marines and supported by an outstanding crew, the possibilities are endless.

That level of commitment speaks volumes about the people behind these vessels and the mission they believe in. Captain Trevor Walsh and Chris Schutte reunite after leading Patriot to a 2nd Place Top Boat finish in 2024, and they're eager to build on that success in 2026. Owner Glen Morrison's commitment extends beyond the tournament, generously donating fishing trips each year to the WHOW Silent Auction to help fund the mission year-round. WHOW welcomes back Tournament Control Vessel — Second C! She is co-owned and co-captained by two highly experienced fishermen who were once co-workers many years ago. There is a lot of sweat equity in Second C, and all that hard work has her well-positioned with the latest systems and upgrades to make another run at the podium after a one-year absence. Her last podium finish came in 2024 for Yellowfin Tuna with veteran Drew Lavoie. In fact, so much work has gone into this beauty that if we had a Ship of Theseus Award, she’d definitely be in the running! Co-Captain Rod Halperin is also the 2023 Founders Award winner, and that comes as no surprise. Rod has been there since the beginning, helping WHOW grow from its humble beginnings to 60 boats and more than 125 Veterans this year. Rod is also the Ken Jennings of fishing. Unlike Jeopardy, however, we’re happy to let him bounce back from his role leading the tournament and team up with his partner, Scott Nagel, to share their love of the ocean with our Veterans — while also sharing decades of knowledge of our local waters. Returning to WHOW for its fifth consecutive year is Surly Mermaid! Owner Ali Palmer Johnson is a seasoned tournament competitor with a proven track record on the water. In 2023, Cindy Miles captured the WHOW Dorado title aboard Surly Mermaid. Fresh off a sweep of top honors in the BYCC vs. NHYC Interclub Tournament, Ali is already dialed in for another strong showing in 2026. It also bears repeating that Ali was a pioneer in creating a dedicated space for women within this tournament. Since 2021, she has been an unwavering supporter of WHOW, generously donating her time, expertise, and resources year after year. We are grateful to welcome Ali and Surly Mermaid back for another year and look forward to seeing the impact her team will make in 2026.
